Gen Con 2010

Gen Con 2010

Ahhh, another year of Gen Con has come and gone in Indianapolis. Once again my people have descended upon the city, filling the streets with wizards, rogues, and cat girls and once again Sunday has witnessed the mass exodus of the geeks, each trudging on tiredly towards home.

This year brought with it new experiences. It was the first time our group had ever attempted True Dungeon. It was the first year we had attended Hentai Dubbing. It was the first year in which The Guild was a mere stones throw away. It was the first year we had attended “The Stink”. Lots and lots of firsts.

“The Stink” is a pre-Gen Con opening party held by the Mavens each year.  This year it was at Union Station and had the theme “Keeping it Clean”.  They gave away free soap, among other kinds of swag, including dice!  (What gamer doesn’t love more dice?!)  All of the hosts and many of the guests dressed in bathrobes and rubber duckies abounded.  To add a little extra excitement to the party, a marriage proposal was made during the evening as well.  And yes, she said “Yes”.

Smoke, the Dragon

True Dungeon was a treat I hope to repeat next year. My group had in it four newbie dungeon crawlers as well as at least one seasoned veteran. While we did really really well in the early rooms, we inevitably died when we came face to face with “Smoak, the dragon”, this years boss fight. However, many in our group, myself  included didn’t really find it to be a fair fight. We were horribly rushed by the dungeon master controlling that room, and was rudely told that we were going to die so we should just leave. But despite that last bit of unpleasantry, we had a great time and look forward to doing it again.

Our Band of Warriors

Our little band of warriors except for the one behind the camera.

Ice Demon

Ice Demon we encountered. Isn't she fierce looking?

This was also a year of limited swag for the masses, but still a fruitful year for Game Paradise. We walked away with several demo games, although not as many as last year. In the coming weeks you’ll get to read reviews on games such as Trailer Park Wars, Redneck Life, and Mission: International Space Station. Also, thanks to a very special VIG Companion, we were lucky enough to pick up the new Dominion Prosperity (Yes! It did come out in time for Gen Con! Who called that?!). All things to look forward to on the blog.

In addition to some great games to review we also talked to a lot of great vendors about partnering to place their goods in our online store. While there aren’t any signed contracts yet, we are in negotiations with several different companies including a t-shirt vendor, a wood worker, a bronze caster, a dice bag maker, and even the producers of a very cute line of wearable dragons that happen to be loved by a certain member of The Guild (*cough* Felicia Day *cough*).

Overall it was a very successful Gen Con full of lots and lots of fun.  I look forward to incorporating some of these new found treasures into my yearly Gen Con plans, specifically “The Stink” and True Dungeon.
