So Long Sucker: Another game to play with next to nothing

So Long Sucker

Last night I learned another great game that fits into the “gaming with next to nothing” category:  So Long Sucker.  All you need for this game is some stackable objects in different colors.  We used poker chips, but apparently you could also just as easily use cards of different suits, or coins.

SLS is a dipolomatic game of cohersion and skill.  There really is no luck involved, which I love, it’s all about how smooth of a player you are.  The basic rules are quite simple as well (how complicated can it be when all you have are some poker chips, right?).

On your turn you play a poker chip into the center of the table.  You can play it on top of an already exisisting stack of chips, or start a new stack.  If you get two chips of the same color in a row, that pile is captured, one chip in that stack is killed, and the rest are kept as prisoners.  Prisoners can be traded freely, or even gifted back to allies, it’s all up to you.  Then play passes to another player, which you choose.  You have to pick someone who does not have a chip in the stack you just played on, or has not played in that stack for the most number of turns.

Those are the basic rules.  There are a few more rules for special situations, but that’s the heart and soul of the game.  The fun comes in in the negotiations.  Making deals with players to let them go next if they will play in a certain way.  Or offering to give back prisoners to someone else in exchange for either the right to play, or for some of your own prisoners back.

While this game didn’t go over well with everyone in my group, I really enjoyed it.  The strategy involved with sucessfully capturing pieces and using your allies to your advantage only to stab them in the back, was a good fit for my playing style.  It reminded me a lot of Diplomacy, except for the extremely abbreviated play time.  A game took us roughly twenty minutes.

This game has inspired me to add some chips to my dice bag for random gaming on the fly, which is saying something.  I’m actually itching to get another game going already, because I really haven’t mastered all the strategy involved at being good at this game.

Linked you’ll find the full set of rules to this game.  It’s an older game now in the public domain, so don’t be shy about spreading the rule sheet around to your friends and family!
